MX (Mail Exchange) records are a fundamental part of email infrastructure. They act as the postal addresses of the internet, telling sending mail servers exactly where to deliver email for a given domain. Without properly configured MX records, email simply cannot reach its destination. Each MX record contains two key pieces of information: a priority value and a mail server hostname.

When an email is sent, the sending server performs a DNS lookup to find the MX records for the recipient's domain. It then attempts delivery to the mail server with the lowest priority number first. If that server is unavailable, it moves on to the next one in order. This cascading system provides built-in fault tolerance — as long as at least one MX server is reachable, email will be delivered. Major providers like Gmail use five or more MX records to ensure near-perfect uptime.

Properly configured MX records are just one piece of the email authentication puzzle. To ensure your emails are delivered reliably and not marked as spam, you should also configure SPF records to authorize your sending servers, and set up DKIM signing to prove message authenticity. Together, MX, SPF, and DKIM form the foundation of trustworthy email delivery.
